Yo Ho Hostel
The art-school hostel of central Varna: muralled walls, a basement studio for music and art events, French windows over the Cathedral gardens, and the city's longest-running backpacker scene.
Yo Ho Hostel is the art-and-music corner of Varna's hostel scene: 8.1 across 778 reviews, in a historic stone-staircase building one block off the Cathedral, with painted murals on every wall, a basement studio for art and music nights, and the city's most loyal returning-backpacker crowd.
Yo Ho sits at 23 Ruse Street, one block north of the Cathedral of the Assumption and across the small Mitropolit Simeon park. Knyaz Boris I Boulevard's restaurants are two minutes south, the Sea Garden gates seven, and Varna Beach about ten minutes downhill via Slivnitsa.
The building is a four-storey historic townhouse with an original stone central staircase and tall French windows. Common spaces are walls-painted murals, mismatched library shelves, and an oversized lounge with French windows opening onto a balcony over the Cathedral gardens — the hostel's defining view and the place every reviewer mentions. Rooms are simply furnished, a mix of mixed dorms (4-8 beds), private singles and doubles. Bathrooms are shared.
The basement studio runs the unusual programming: temporary art galleries, evening music sessions, movie nights and the occasional culture-focused workshop. It's not a bar-crawl hostel — the social vibe is creative-residency more than party — but the events draw a loyal crew of locals as well as backpackers. Free WiFi, 24-hour reception, washing machine, fully equipped shared kitchen.
This is the right call if you want a budget-priced central hostel with personality and a genuine community feel. Skip it if you want hotel-grade rooms or a private bathroom — the rooms are spartan and bathrooms are shared. The crowd skews early-twenties solo travellers, art and music students, and returning Eastern-European backpackers.

“Incredibly nice staff, who were helpful in every way. At checkout, we were allowed to borrow a room to store the bag, since we had a late bus. The hostel is homely, if you are of the artistic type and can tolerate it a little rustic. Perfectly centrally located.”
“Loved having a coffee overlooking the city gardens and cathedral through French windows. Spacious, inviting common room and kitchen. Large, characterful, historic building, with stone staircase right in the heart of the city. Knowledgeable, friendly staff with a real interest in their guests.”
“The staff was fantastic, friendly and helpful in need. The place is very interesting, I loved the paintings on the walls and the location is very close to parks and restaurants. Very beautiful and I felt safe.”
