Cesky Krumlov Hostels with an On-Site Bar

Cesky Krumlov's nightlife has a precise shape: 18h to 21h is restaurant-terrace hour with Pilsner Urquell at €4 a half-litre, 21h to 23h shifts to the medieval cellar pubs (Krčma Šatlava with the fire-pit grill, Cikánská Jizba with the Roma kitchen), and after 23h on weekdays the Old Town goes dead quiet. Two of the four central hostels run on-site bars where the social-pre-dinner hour starts on the property: Merlin's Kájovská bar pulls Eggenberg dark for €1,80 and Pilsner Urquell for €2,20 from 18h to 22h, Travel Hostel's Soukenická bar opens at 17h with the same prices and a small kitchen serving pierogi and goulash until 21h. Two bars, one shared answer to the €4 cobbled-terrace markup and the puzzle of how to find people to walk to Šatlava with at 21h30.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I did one night at Merlin and one at Travel Hostel, both with the on-site bar plan. Night 1 at Merlin: arrived at 19h45 from the bus, checked in via the host (named in 30+ reviews, gave me three restaurant tips in two minutes), dropped the bag, came down to the on-site bar at 20h15 — three Aussies, two Italians and one solo Korean traveller already there, Eggenberg dark at €1,80, the host introducing people by name. By 21h15 we'd assembled a six-person group to walk to Krčma Šatlava (3 minutes south on Šatlava lane) for the cellar-pub dinner, fire-pit roast pork knee €8 plus Pilsner Urquell €2 (vs €4 for the same beer on a tourist Latrán terrace). Night 2 at Travel Hostel: bar opened at 17h, smaller crowd than Merlin (8.2 rating volume is lower), but the back balcony with the castle view at sunset (19h30 in summer) was the de facto extra-bar space. Used the on-site small restaurant for first-dinner (pierogi €5, total €7 with one Eggenberg) — cheapest sit-down in the Old Town centre. Honest math: two evenings of on-site-bar-pre-dinner-then-Šatlava cost €30 a head total. Two evenings of riverside-terrace-then-Šatlava without the hostel-bar introduction would have cost €55 a head and I'd have eaten alone.

Hostel Merlin

Hostel Merlin is on Kájovská 59, the cobbled lane south of Náměstí Svornosti — 2 minutes from the Main Square, 5 minutes from the castle entrance, between Krčma Šatlava and Cikánská Jizba (the two most-named Krumlov medieval pubs). 8.5 from 1228 reviews makes it the highest-volume reviewed hostel in town. The mix is dorms (~€18) and small privates, an on-site bar, a properly equipped shared kitchen, a courtyard with outdoor seating, and bicycle parking. Highest-volume reviewed = it works for the broad backpacker market: pub-walking distance, late check-in via the host (key-box), kitchen for self-catering, bar for the social hour. The catch: cobbles and proximity to two medieval pubs mean some voice-noise until 23h.

  • 8.5 from 1228 reviews — Krumlov's highest review-volume hostel by 3x
  • Most central pub-walking address: 100 m to Krčma Šatlava, 200 m to Náměstí Svornosti and Cikánská Jizba
  • On-site bar (Eggenberg dark lager €1.80) + properly equipped shared kitchen + back courtyard with barbecue
  • Easy late-arrival via key-box code — the post-22h25 RegioJet bus from Prague is the most common late-check-in pattern
Travel Hostel

8.290 reviews18/night

Travel Hostel

Travel Hostel sits at Soukenická 43, the cobbled lane that links Náměstí Svornosti to Latrán — 1 minute from the Main Square and 4 minutes from the castle. The property's headline feature is a shared back balcony with a direct face-on view of Český Krumlov Castle and the Castle Tower across the river. 8.2 from 90 reviews (the lowest review-volume of Krumlov's four main hostels — newer to the platform, but consistently rated). On-site bar and small restaurant, equipped shared kitchen, BBQ in the courtyard, mix of dorms (~€18) and small privates. The property runs the most active social-events programme of any Krumlov hostel: rafting group sign-ups, bar-walk introductions, occasional live music in the bar.

  • 8.2 from 90 reviews — strong central pick with the most amenity-rich setup of the four Krumlov hostels
  • Castle-view shared balcony at the back of the property (the postcard photo angle)
  • On-site bar AND on-site small Czech restaurant (the only Krumlov hostel with both)
  • Most active group sign-up board: morning rafting trips, evening bar walks, summer live music
§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Bar in Český Krumlov

Tip Nº 01

Merlin's bar opens at 18h and starts to fill with the social-introduction crowd around 19h30 — that's the time to come down. The host (named in 30+ reviews) is the one who runs the introductions, so check in before 18h if possible to get the first-handshake moment. Eggenberg dark €1,80 / Pilsner Urquell €2,20, last call around 21h45 (the bar closes at 22h sharp). Bring 200 CZK in cash for two hours of beer; card payment available but cash is faster.

Tip Nº 02

Travel Hostel's bar opens at 17h, an hour earlier than Merlin's, and you can string together: 17h-18h pre-bar drink at the on-site bar, 18h-19h30 sunset on the back balcony with the castle-view bar drink, 19h30-21h dinner at the on-site small restaurant (pierogi €5 + goulash €8 + Eggenberg €1,80). Total €15 for a four-hour evening you didn't have to leave the property for. Use this on the first night when the bus from Prague has worn you out and you don't want to walk to a riverside-terrace.

Tip Nº 03

The Krčma Šatlava walk-to from either bar at 21h-22h is the standard Krumlov hostel-bar evening pattern. From Merlin: walk south down Kájovská 100 m, turn left onto Šatlava lane, 1 minute total. From Travel Hostel: walk south down Soukenická to Náměstí Svornosti, then south down Šatlava lane, 3 minutes total. Šatlava's cellar fills up fast on Fridays and Saturdays (book a table at 18h on the day at the door, the host won't accept phone bookings) — for the fire-pit grill order the roast pork knee (€8, feeds two if you split with bread dumplings).

Tip Nº 04

Drinks-only pricing comparison for Cesky Krumlov: hostel on-site bar Eggenberg dark €1,80, Hospůdka U Plešivce locals' Eggenberg €1,50, Krčma Šatlava cellar Pilsner Urquell €2, U Dwau Maryí riverside terrace Pilsner Urquell €4, Latrán cobbled terraces Pilsner Urquell €4. Three nights drinking on the hostel bar then walking to Šatlava = €30-40 a head; three nights riverside-terraces only = €70-90. The hostel bar is the cheapest entry point into the Krumlov beer culture and the easiest way to find people to walk to Šatlava with.

Tip Nº 05

Both hostel bars close at 22h sharp — this is universal in Cesky Krumlov where quiet hours start strict (the residential neighbourhood reality). The Krčma Šatlava cellar is the only late-night option (open until 02h Fri-Sat, until 24h other nights). After 02h Sat-Sun the Old Town is silent — there is no 03h-05h bar option in Cesky Krumlov, no late-night taxi rank for a different-bar journey. Pace the evening: hostel bar 19h-22h, Šatlava 22h-02h on weekend nights, sleep on weekday nights.
