Cesky Krumlov Hostels with Bike Rental

Cesky Krumlov is a town that walks well — 15 minutes crosses the entire UNESCO core on cobbles — but the most underrated half-day from any Krumlov hostel is the 6-km Vltava cycle path loop downstream to the Eggenberg brewery and back. Two of the four central hostels include free bike rental for guests: Postel on Rybářská hands out city bikes (single-speed, no-frills) at the reception desk for guest-only short rides, Merlin on Kájovská has bicycle parking on site (no rental of its own, but the cobbled Old Town is small enough that the Postel bikes from 2 minutes away cover the same use case). Two bike-access setups, one shared answer to the Krumlov visitor's standard question of 'what to do for a half-day after the castle and rafting' and the €15 cost of a full-day rental from the riverbank operators.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I did the Eggenberg cycle loop on the Postel bikes with the same Aussies I'd cooked dinner with the night before. We left at 10h45 (the bikes are in a small rack at Postel's reception, sign out by name), rode south down Rybářská to Latrán, crossed the Plešivec bridge, picked up the Vltava cycle path on the south bank and followed it 3 km downstream past Plešivec residential streets, then 3 km on the east bank past the brewery sign. Reached the Eggenberg brewery at 11h35, bought tour tickets at the gate (80 CZK / €3,20), did the 35-minute cellar tour with the included Eggenberg dark in the small taproom afterwards. Cycled back via Plešivec for the photo angle of the castle from the south side, total round-trip 100 minutes including the brewery stop. On Merlin's side: the property doesn't rent its own bikes but has bike parking, and the Postel reception is a 4-minute walk away on Rybářská — they'll lend a bike to a non-guest for €5 if Postel guests aren't using all four bikes (it's an unofficial arrangement, ask at Postel reception, brings them a bit of side income). Honest math: free Postel bikes plus €3,20 brewery tour = €3,20 for the half-day. Renting from the riverside operators (Vltava.cz, Ingetour) costs €10-15 / day plus the €3,20 brewery, so €13-18 for the same half-day.

Our Top 2 Picks

Hostel Postel

9.2355 reviews22/night

Hostel Postel

Hostel Postel sits on Rybářská, one of the quieter cobbled lanes inside the Old Town's river bend, 7 minutes on foot from the castle and 300 m from Náměstí Svornosti. 9.2 from 355 reviews, room mix from 6-bunk dorms (~€22) up to small family privates, with a properly equipped shared kitchen, a stone-walled inner courtyard, free bike rental for guests, and an in-house sauna that few of the other Krumlov hostels match. The catch: no on-site bar, no organised events, quiet hours kick in early — book Postel for the location, the kitchen and the courtyard, not for a hostel-bar scene.

  • 9.2 rating from 355 reviews — joint-highest in the Cesky Krumlov hostel scene
  • Inside the UNESCO river-bend Old Town, 7 min walk to the castle and 4 min to Náměstí Svornosti
  • Properly equipped shared kitchen + stone-walled inner courtyard (the property's two best features)
  • Free bike rental + in-house sauna are both rare in Krumlov hostels and included for guests
Hostel Merlin

8.51,228 reviews18/night

Hostel Merlin

Hostel Merlin is on Kájovská 59, the cobbled lane south of Náměstí Svornosti — 2 minutes from the Main Square, 5 minutes from the castle entrance, between Krčma Šatlava and Cikánská Jizba (the two most-named Krumlov medieval pubs). 8.5 from 1228 reviews makes it the highest-volume reviewed hostel in town. The mix is dorms (~€18) and small privates, an on-site bar, a properly equipped shared kitchen, a courtyard with outdoor seating, and bicycle parking. Highest-volume reviewed = it works for the broad backpacker market: pub-walking distance, late check-in via the host (key-box), kitchen for self-catering, bar for the social hour. The catch: cobbles and proximity to two medieval pubs mean some voice-noise until 23h.

  • 8.5 from 1228 reviews — Krumlov's highest review-volume hostel by 3x
  • Most central pub-walking address: 100 m to Krčma Šatlava, 200 m to Náměstí Svornosti and Cikánská Jizba
  • On-site bar (Eggenberg dark lager €1.80) + properly equipped shared kitchen + back courtyard with barbecue
  • Easy late-arrival via key-box code — the post-22h25 RegioJet bus from Prague is the most common late-check-in pattern
§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Bike Rental in Český Krumlov

Tip Nº 01

Postel's bike rental at reception is sign-out-by-name with no deposit and no time limit, but it works on a first-come basis (4 bikes only). On weekends in summer (June-August) all four bikes are usually out by 11h — sign out at 09h-10h if you want to do the Eggenberg loop before the rafting day-trippers fill the riverbank. The bikes have built-in locks but no helmet provision; if you want a helmet, the Vltava.cz rental on the riverbank has them for €2 / day (separate to renting their bikes).

Tip Nº 02

The Eggenberg brewery tour timing: Mon-Sat 11h, 14h and 16h, 35 minutes, 80 CZK / €3,20 with one beer included in the small taproom afterwards. The 11h tour is the most touristy (combines with the standard rafting put-in time), the 14h tour is the quietest weekday option, the 16h tour overlaps with the post-rafting crowd refuelling on Eggenberg dark. Book on weekends in summer (May-August) at the gate the day before; walk-in is fine on weekdays. Bring exactly 80 CZK in cash for fastest entry — the gate accepts cards but the queue is faster with cash.

Tip Nº 03

Cesky Krumlov bike-from-Postel route to the Eggenberg brewery: out the door of Postel on Rybářská, left to Latrán bridge (200 m), cross the bridge, immediate right onto the Vltava cycle path (signposted), follow the river south for 3 km on the south bank, cross back to the east bank at the brewery footbridge, follow signs for Pivovar Český Krumlov (200 m up from the river). Total cycling time 18-22 minutes, all flat, well-paved. Return via Plešivec back-road for the photo angle of the castle from the south (add 10 minutes, more scenic).

Tip Nº 04

If Postel's bikes are all out and you're staying at Merlin or Travel Hostel, the cheapest fallback is the Vltava.cz rental on the Plešivec bridge approach: €10 / day for a city bike, €2 helmet, no deposit. Walk 5-7 minutes from either hostel to the riverbank, rent for half a day (they accept hourly rates of €4 / 2 hours if you ask, even though it's not posted — say you're going to the brewery and back). Skip the Ingetour rental 100 m further, their bikes are in worse shape and the price is the same.

Tip Nº 05

The Vltava cycle path beyond the Eggenberg brewery continues to Větřní (10 km from Cesky Krumlov), then up the Lipno reservoir cycle network (60-80 km from town) for multi-day cycle tours. If you've brought your own bike or rented for a full day, this is the proper Czech-cycling experience that the Postel-bike Eggenberg loop hints at. Day-trippers from Cesky Krumlov to Větřní and back: 4 hours total cycling, lunch at the small Větřní pub on the river square (€8 goulash, locals' rate). Bring the Plzeň salami and rye bread from Hruška for the picnic option.
