§ 01 — Summary

Hostel Merlin is on Kájovská 59, the cobbled lane south of Náměstí Svornosti — 2 minutes from the Main Square, 5 minutes from the castle entrance, between Krčma Šatlava and Cikánská Jizba (the two most-named Krumlov medieval pubs). 8.5 from 1228 reviews makes it the highest-volume reviewed hostel in town. The mix is dorms (~€18) and small privates, an on-site bar, a properly equipped shared kitchen, a courtyard with outdoor seating, and bicycle parking. Highest-volume reviewed = it works for the broad backpacker market: pub-walking distance, late check-in via the host (key-box), kitchen for self-catering, bar for the social hour. The catch: cobbles and proximity to two medieval pubs mean some voice-noise until 23h.

§ 02 — The full story

Hostel Merlin sits at Kájovská 59, the cobbled lane that drops south from Náměstí Svornosti toward the Plešivec bridge. The townhouse is original Renaissance with vaulted ground-floor common areas, a small open courtyard at the back with outdoor seating and a barbecue, and an on-site bar that opens around 18h serving Eggenberg dark lager (45 CZK / €1.80) and Pilsner Urquell (55 CZK / €2.20). Reception is small, the host runs the place and reviewers from Ireland and Canada specifically name the personal welcome as the property's defining feature — Atharva from India listed five reasons to recommend it (location, staff, hygiene, room space, kitchen, price) in an actual checklist.

The room mix is dorms (mixed 4-bed and 6-bed) and small private doubles, mostly with shared bathrooms on each floor — a couple of privates have en-suite. Beds are bunks with privacy curtains in the dorms, individual reading lights, sockets near each bed, lockers under the bunks (BYO padlock or rent at reception €1). The shared kitchen is properly equipped (4-burner stove, microwave, fridge, full crockery, kettle, toaster, free coffee), the staff cleans the common areas twice a day, and reviewers from across the EU specifically call out hygiene standards.

The location is pure UNESCO core: 100 m to Krčma Šatlava (the vaulted medieval pub with the fire-pit grill), 200 m to Cikánská Jizba (the Roma-influenced cheap-and-generous kitchen), 200 m to Náměstí Svornosti, 5 minutes uphill to the castle entrance, 6 minutes to the Vltava rafting put-in at the Plešivec bridge. The trade-off: Kájovská gets cobbled-pub voice-noise until 23h. Book a courtyard-facing room (back of the building) if you're a light sleeper. Free WiFi throughout. Late check-in via key-box code (sent in the booking confirmation), bike parking on site (no rental — Postel and Travel Hostel are the bike-rental properties).

Superb location. Friendly Staff. Good hygiene standards. Spacious rooms. Clean kitchen and seating area. Affordable price. Five reasons to recommend in a checklist — got everything I needed for my Krumlov stay and the host was personally helpful with restaurant tips.

The hostel is very cosy and in a great location. Check in was very easy and the receptionist was very kind and friendly. The kitchen is well equipped, the bar is a nice social spot before going out into the town. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Cesky Krumlov.

Good spot in centre of town, really easy to find. I was arriving late but host allowed key box entry which was great. Nice common areas and the bar was reasonably priced for the centre. Slept well in the courtyard-facing room.
