Évora City ToursRanked guide

Best Hostels for City Tours in Évora

Évora is a UNESCO-protected open-air museum, and a guided walk turns it from a pretty postcard into a 2,000-year layered story. The three hostels here all have active tour desks that book the city walks, the Anta do Zambujeiro dolmen run (Europe's largest, 14 km west), and Alentejo wine country day-trips. Heaven Inn has the broadest tour book and the best wine-country reputation; Old Évora Hostel sits on the centre's tour pickup street; HI Évora runs Movijovem's own bike-tour and cooking-class programme June through September.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I booked the Cromeleque dos Almendres dolmen run through Heaven Inn — €30 each, four of us in a van, our guide (also a Évora resident) stopped at the cork-oak megaliths, the Anta do Zambujeiro (Europe's largest, 4500 BC), then a winery in Reguengos. Whole thing was 09:00–14:30. The Lisbon-based equivalent would have been a full-day bus tour at €80+, ending with 30 minutes at the dolmen. Worth booking through the hostel even if you're not a backpacker.

Heaven Inn Suites & Terrace

Heaven Inn Suites & Terrace is the highest-rated hostel in Évora (9.0 across 524 reviews) and the pick when you want a rooftop with a real view over the cidade-museu. It sits on Rua Romão Ramalho — the quiet residential stretch southwest of Praça do Giraldo, two minutes' walk from the main square but a world removed from the tour-bus chatter. Adults-only, female and mixed dorms with private bathrooms inside, plus the standout amenity: a private rooftop terrace looking onto the Sé cathedral towers.

  • 9.0 rating across 524 reviews — Évora's top-rated property on Booking
  • Rooftop terrace looking onto the Sé cathedral towers, included in the breakfast service
  • Every room — dorm or private — has a private en-suite bathroom inside
  • Adults-only: 18+ only, and quiet hours from 22:30 enforced
Old Évora Hostel
02
8.3412 reviews22/night

Old Évora Hostel

Old Évora Hostel sits inside a Pombaline townhouse on Rua Serpa Pinto, three minutes' walk west of Praça do Giraldo. It's the most social option in the centre — full shared kitchen, sun terrace with outdoor seating, a guitar in the lounge, and continental breakfast included on every rate. Mixed dorms (4-bed and 6-bed) and a couple of private rooms, all with shared bathrooms in the cluster. The 8.3 rating across 412 reviews is built on the kitchen-and-terrace setup that backpackers actually use.

  • 8.3 rating across 412 reviews — consistent on cleanliness, location and the breakfast included
  • Sun terrace plus inner courtyard — the only Évora hostel with two outdoor zones
  • Continental breakfast included on the basic rate (€22 bed)
  • Reception 14:00–19:00; door code access at all other hours
HI Évora – Pousada de Juventude

7.7318 reviews18/night

HI Évora – Pousada de Juventude

HI Évora – Pousada de Juventude is the official Hostelling International member in Évora, run by Movijovem in a renovated centenary building on Rua Miguel Bombarda. It sits on the north side of the walled centre, four minutes from Praça do Giraldo and three from the Templo Romano. Every room — dorm or private — has a private bathroom inside, which is unusual for the price point (€18 a bed). It's the cheapest viable bed in the historic centre and the only Évora option that takes the HI card discount.

  • Official Hostelling International property — accepts the HI card for the 10% member discount
  • Private bathrooms in every room (dorm or twin) — unusual at this price point
  • Around 90 beds — the largest hostel in Évora, with family rooms available
  • Wheelchair-accessible ground-floor dorms
Burgos Guest House

7.7287 reviews35/night

Burgos Guest House

Burgos Guest House (listed on Booking as Burgos Hostel — same property) is a 17th-century townhouse on Rua de Burgos, the narrow lane that runs from Praça do Giraldo down to the Sé cathedral. It's the closest of any Évora property to the main square — under a minute's walk. The interior is dressed in period furniture: a 17th-century lounge, wooden floors, wrought-iron beds. Private rooms only — no dorms — with private bathrooms inside, AC and balconies on the upper-floor rooms. Better described as a small guesthouse than a hostel, but it's the cheapest private-room option this close to Giraldo.

  • Under 1 minute walk to Praça do Giraldo — closest hostel-grade property in town
  • 17th-century townhouse with period furniture and architectural character
  • Private rooms only (no dorms) — doubles, twins, triples and one quadruple
  • Vaulted ground-floor breakfast room serving continental breakfast (€7 add-on)
Hostel Raymundo
05
7.3195 reviews24/night

Hostel Raymundo

Hostel Raymundo sits on Rua do Raimundo (also spelled Rua do Raymundo), the residential lane that runs southwest from Praça do Giraldo to the city walls. Four minutes' walk to Giraldo, six to the Sé cathedral. The property runs about 20 beds across mixed dorms, twins and family rooms — and is the most family-oriented hostel in central Évora, with an indoor play area and a games room that the other hostels don't bother with. Shared kitchen, sun terrace, and a free breakfast package included on every rate (a paper bag with bread, juice, jam — practical rather than scenic, but it's there).

  • Indoor play area for younger children — unique among Évora hostels in the walled centre
  • 4-bed family rooms with private balconies and parquet floors
  • Shared kitchen and free breakfast package included on the basic rate
  • Four-minute walk to Praça do Giraldo on a quiet residential lane
§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with City Tours in Évora

Tip Nº 01

Book the city walking tour at your hostel reception the night before — €15, meets at Praça do Giraldo at 10:00 daily. Two-hour loop covering the cathedral, Roman temple, Capela dos Ossos and the university courtyards.

Tip Nº 02

The Anta do Zambujeiro dolmen + Cromeleque dos Almendres half-day megalithic tour runs €25–35 from any of these hostels — book the night before, pickup at 09:00.

Tip Nº 03

Wine-country tours (Cartuxa, Monte da Ravasqueira, Esporão) run €40–60 with transport. Heaven Inn has the strongest relationships with the smaller estates that don't always show up online.

Tip Nº 04

Movijovem (HI Évora) cooking classes run Tuesday and Thursday in summer — alentejano staples (migas, açorda, queijo de Nisa), €25 a head including the meal.

Tip Nº 05

If you're driving in from Lisbon, the Cromeleque dos Almendres is on a 5km dirt road — most hostel taxi tours include the off-road approach in their price.
